Take This Job and …

Tao Te Ching – chapter 24
Stretching to reach it
we fall.
Running to catch it,
we get lost.
Pretending to be enlightened
we become dim and foolish.
Trying to “do it right,”
we fail.
Looking for praise,
we receive nothing.
Grabbing hold of it,
we lose it.

All of this strutting, striving,
straining, and grasping
is excess baggage.
The very freedom it promises does not appear
until we lay it down.

Most of the things I’ve wanted in my life I have found: deep love, interesting work, beautiful places, wonderful friends, and good health. Still a lingering sense of dissatisfaction has kept me always thinking about the next thing to do, the next place to go, or the unknown yet important quest to undertake.

Well, friends, I quit. My conditioned mind whose sole purpose has been to keep me restless and discontent can take its job and shove it, I ain’t listening to it no more. Been listening for nigh on seventy years and I ain’t listening to it no more. It can take its job and shove it.

Whew, that feels good.

  1. Love this post and most all of them. This daily dose is a great gift to us all. This one is where I am as well at 73, just wanting to let go of it all and rest in the Tao and flow to bliss. Love dwight zavitz
